. Peter Max caught Compassion is Cool's attention when we met him at the May 2002 HumaneUSA fundraiser in Malibu, California and he told us about Cincy Freedom. Freedom, is a 1,000 cow who jumped over a 6 foot fence while the slaughterhouse workers were on break and eluded capture for 11 days! Peter has donated $180,000 of artwork to provide a safe home for the slaughterhouse escapee.

The Cincinnati Post reported that "When Max first inquired about possibly acquiring the cow after it was captured following its 11-day odyssey, he was distressed that he was ''something like No. 50 in line'' among those who had expressed a similar interest.

But if the cow's against-the-odds escape from Ken Meyer Meats slaughterhouse in Camp Washington touched Max, Meyer himself was quickly impressed with Max's earnestness - and generous offer to not only assure the cow a very pleasant life, but to do so in a way that will also benefit thousands of other animals at the SPCA [Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals]." Freedom, will be officially adopted in a ceremony at Cincinnati's CompassionFest 2002 by a Cowalition of local vegetarian and animal welfare organizations. Freedom now resides at Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, New York (www.FarmSanctuary.org).
